January 23, 2025, Charlottetown, PEI – Reflecting the broader trend in Canadian health regulation, Prince Edward Island’s two nursing regulators are exploring the potential creation of a single body to oversee the province’s nursing and midwifery professions.
CLPNPEI is the regulatory body that oversees the entry-to-practice requirements, professional standards, continuing education, and complaints and disciplinary processes of the province’s Licensed Practical Nurses. Similarly, the CRNMPEI regulates registered nurses, nurse practitioners, registered psychiatric nurses, and midwives under the same mandate. Both organizations operate under the Regulated Health Professions Act and are governed by provincial legislation. The colleges will conduct province-wide consultations later this month and in February to gather feedback from the public, nurses, midwives, key healthcare partners and providers, and other valued and interested parties.
“We’re committed to transparency and inclusive engagement as we explore forming a new single regulator for nursing and midwifery,” says Nicole Blanchard, Council Chair, CLPNPEI. “Our next step is to gather information to determine whether a single regulator can better serve the public interest.”
Earlier this year, the boards of directors (Councils) of the CLPNPEI and CRNMPEI held a joint discussion to assess creating a single regulatory body. Reflecting on recent changes in other Canadian jurisdictions, a decision was made to investigate the merits of this move in PEI.
“We see the alignment with national trends as a potential opportunity to increase efficiencies and streamline processes to further strengthen our public interest mandate,” added Mark MacKenzie, Council Chair, CRNMPEI. “In doing so, we’re interested in hearing from the broader public and determining which is the best path for all Islanders.”
In recent years, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and other jurisdictions have undergone significant transformation to their licensing and professional regulatory processes.
